Zwei mal Langstrecke im Flieger erschlägt einen, der folgende Jetleg auch. Wenn die lange Reise nicht wäre, wäre ich öfter da. Insbesondere die viele Inseln im Pazifik locken. Nach der Enttäuschung von Fiji hat die Polynesia Reise mit Samoa und Tonga vieles entschädigt. Und der nächste Trip nach Frz. Polynesia und Cooks war auch klasse. Ganz oben auf meiner Liste steht Papua Neu Guinea und die benachbarten Inselreiche.

Two times long distance flights beat you down, the following jet leg as well. When we had not the long trip, I would be more often there. Special the many islands in the pacific are calling. After the disappointment about Fiji the Polynesia trip with Samoa and Tonga compensate a lot. And the next trip to French Polynesia and Cooks was also excellent. On top of my list are Papua New Guinea and the neighboring island countries.

Grosses Land und wenig Bevölkerung. Der letzte Kontinent historisch und geographisch hat schon seine Reize, aber ohne Auto geht da wegen den Entfernungen gar nichts. Nicht einmal auf so einer kleiner Insel wie X-mas. Zum Tauchen ist das Great Barrier Reef am bekanntesten, ich möchte es in 3 Abschnitten angehen. Aber eigentlich kann man rundherum um den Kontinent ins Wasser steigen. Da sind noch viele Trips nötig um das Potential auszuschöpfen. Exmouth und Perth an der Westküste reizt mich als nächstes.

Big country and small population. The last continent from historical and geographical point of view has his own charm, but because of the long distances you are lost without a car. As well on such a small island like X-mass. The most famous diving is in the Great Barrier Reef, I like to visit it in three steps. But actual all around the continent you can jump somewhere into the water. There are much more trips necessary to tap the full potential. Exmouth and Perth on the west coast are my next preferred destinations.

Die Stadt mit dem markanten Opera House ist für mich eine der schönsten auf dieser Erde. Im Zentrum reihen sich die Towers aneinander überragt von dem Fernsehturm. Im Gegensatz zum Rest des Landes kommt man auch ohne Auto zurecht und kann ganz gut shoppen. Am interessantesten fand ich die Gegend um Darling Harbour. Ausgebaut zu einem Ausgehzentrum reihen sich Kaffees, Pubs und Restaurants aneinander, ein grosses Imax ist auch vorhanden. Ein Hafenrundfahrt mit einer der vielen Fähren sollte man sich nicht entgehen lassen.

The city with the prominent opera house is for me one of the most beautiful on this earth. In the center is located a group of towers overtopped by the high sky tower. In the compact center shopping is very nice and a car is not necessary in opposite to the rest of the country. The moist interesting is the area surrounding the Darling Harbor. There are some centers with coffee shops, pubs and restaurants, a big Imax is as well on the place. A harbor roundtrip with one of the many ferry boats is a not to miss chance.

In Sydney wird überall an der Küste getaucht, insbesondere die Strände im Norden eignen sich ganz hervorragend. Ausserdem sind an Wochenenden Boatsdives angesagt, manchmal ganz schön tief. Kaltwassertauchen ist angesagt, Temperatur schwankt zwischen 15 grad im Juli und 22 grad im Januar. Ich habe mir mit Mitte September nicht gerade die wärmste Saison ausgesucht mit 17 grad. Ich habe ein Wrack auf 50m besucht und einen netten Tauchgang an der Küste gemacht, wo ich die meine ersten 2 Port Jackson Haie gesehen habe.

In Sydney everywhere on the coastline will be submerged, especially the beaches in the north are excellent suited. Beside this on the weekends are boat dives, sometimes very deep. This area means cold water diving. Temperature balance between 15dgrs in July to 22 dgrs in January. I choose for myself not the warmest season mid of September with about 17dgrs. On boat dives I have visited a wrack at 50m and after this deep dive we had a nice relax dive close to the coastline, where I have seen my first two Port Jackson sharks.

Das weltberühmte Great Barrier Reef war für mich eine starke Enttäuschung. Die Ursache waren die Veranstaltern, die mit 20 kotzenden Japanern auf schlechten Plätzen Schnuppertauchen gemacht haben. Trotz täglichen Bootswechsel hat sich nichts geändert. Besser war es in Port Douglas, da war das Tauchen dann ganz ok und es ist die Ortschaft die am ehesten als Urlaubsort durchgeht. Baden kann man wegen den Wellen kaum, Nov - Feb Quallenalarm! Am besten mit Mietwagen die Küste absuchen und dort bleiben wo es einem gefällt.

The world famous Great Barrier Reef disappointed me strongly. The reason was the operators, which run the daily trips with 20 barfing Japanese on bad dive spots for introduce scuba dives. I changed daily the boats, but despite all promises no change. Much better it was in Port Douglas, there the diving was ok and this village soonest could be accepted as a holiday spot. Bathing is not comfortable due the high waves, and be aware in Nov - Feb is the jellyfish alarm. I recommend to take a rent a car, search on the coast line and stay where you like it most.

Das beste Tauchen von Australien, aber nur mit Mehrtagestrip erreichbar. Die achtstündige Überfahrt kann ziemlich rau werden, auf unserem Trip haben 22 von 24 auf heftigste gekotzt. Dann aber gegen Morgen tritt Ruhe ein und das Tauchen belohnt einen. Bei vier Tauchgängen sieht man eine Haifütterung mit ca. 30 Haien, in der Ferne einige Hammerhaie, Mantas und hat eine Supersicht. Dann wieder die ätzende Rückfahrt, aber vielleicht ist die See nicht immer so rau. Vor Ort in Cairns kann man Last Minute zu ganz guten Preisen ergattern.

The best diving in Australia, but only by a live aboard reachable. The eight hours crossing can become very uncomfortable, on our trip 20 from 22 throw up. But in the morning it becomes quiet and the diving compensate all previous trouble. On four dives it will be presented one shark feeding with about 30 sharks, in the back ground some hammerheads, Mantas and a superb visibility. Then comes again the god-awful return voyage, but maybe the sea is not all times so bad as we had it. On site in Cairns you can snatch a last minute offer with a good prize.

Gehört geographisch zu Asien, da nur etwa 400km südlich von Jakarta. Die Insel ist berühmt für jährliche Krabbenwanderungen Anfang Dezember, wenn die Strassen gesperrt werden um nicht unzählige Krabben zu überfahren. Kein Sandstrand. Mietwagen ein Muss, am besten gleich ab dem Flughafen. Tauchen an herrlichen Steilwänden. Mit dem Diveshop am besten schriftlich vorab Vereinbarungen treffen, da sich der Basenbesitzer an seine eigenen Regeln nicht hält und höhere Preise verrechnett. Dafür ist Lisa vom lokalen Reisebüro umso netter.

It belongs geographically to Asia, due its only about 400km south of Jakarta. The island is famous for the annual crab migration beginning of December, when the roads are locked to avoid damage on countless crabs. No sandy beach. Rent a car is a must, at the best straight from the airport. Diving is possible on excellent walls. With the dive shop you should made a written in advance agreement, due the Austrian owner charge you higher prices that his own homepage shows. But Lisa from the local travel agency is absolute trustful and recommendable.

Die Cook Inseln zwischen Tahiti und Tonga sind seit 1992 unabhängig, jedoch mit Neuseeland assoziiert. Neuseeland hat die Aussenpolitik übernommen, im Innern bestimmt Cook selber. Die Inselgruppe gehört zu Polynesien und die Bevölkerung sind weitgehend Maori. Die vulkanischen Inseln sind von Korallenriffen umgeben. Die Anreise erfolgt am besten über Neuseeland. Die Cooks sind von den bisher besuchten Inseln in der Südsee auch unter Berücksichtigung des Preis/Leistungsverhältnisses der beste Platz.

The Cook Islands between Tahiti and Tonga are an independent country since 1992, bur associated with New Zealand. Internally Cooks govern themselves, the outside relation and defense is covered by New Zealand. The island group is part of Polynesia and the population are mostly Maori. The volcanic islands are surrounded from coral reefs. Arrival is at the best via New Zealand. In my opinion from all the visited islands in the South Pacific under consideration of price performance relation the Cook Islands are the best holiday spot.

Die Hauptinsel der Cook Inseln ist sehr übersichtlich. Zumindest zeitweise sollte man sich einen Mietwagen nehmen und einmal um die Insel rumfahren. Für einen Mietwagen muss man für ein paar $ einen Führerschein ausstellen lassen. In Avarua gibt es einige Kneipen und auch etwas Nachtleben. Ansonsten spielt sich das Leben in den Strandhotels ab. Getaucht wird in den Passagen des Aussenriffs. Da kann es ganz schön ziehen, was auch einige Grossfische und Haie anzieht. Durch die Strömung gab es auch bessere Sicht als in Aitutaki.

The main island of the Cook Islands is very well arranged. At least for a while a rental car is recommended to circle the island. For a rental car you have to spend a couple of $ for a local driving license. In Avarua are some pubs and also some nightlife is available. Otherwise everything else happens in the beach hotels. The diving is performed in the passages of the outside reef. there could be some strong currents, what also attracts pelagic and sharks. Because of the current the visibility was also better then in Aitutaki.

Das schönste Atoll in den Cook Inseln ist Aitutaki, das Bora Bora sehr ähnlich ist. Zur Insel kommt man von Raratonga mit einem einheimischen Flieger. Rund um die Insel gibt es viele Traumstrände. Aufgrund der begrenzten Entfernungen kann man die Insel gut mit einem Fahrrad erkunden. Paradise Cove liegt direkt am Strand und hat nette Bungalows. Etwas mühsamer ist es ein Restaurant zu finden. Getaucht wird am Aussenriff mit vielen Korallen und Adlerrochen. Es läuft sehr entspannt ab, da wir nie mehr als 3 Taucher waren.

The best atoll in the Cook Islands is Aitutaki, which looks similar like Bora Bora. The arrival to the island happens with a small local plane. Around the island are a lot of nice dream beaches. Due the limited distances the island could be conveniently explored by a bicycle. Paradise Cove is located direct on a nice beach and has nice bungalows. A bit more difficult it could be to find a restaurant. The diving will be performed on the outside reef with many corals and eagle rays. Everything is very relaxed due we was never more then 3 divers.

Melanesia - Fiji

Melanesien erstreckt sich von Papua bis Fiji. Mein erster Trip in das gelobte Land: der Traum von der Südsee ist ausgeträumt. Da wird auch nur mit Wasser gekocht. Das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis stimmt einfach nicht und so toll sind die Plätze auch nicht. Wir sind nur mit dem Flugticket und Reiseführer losgezogen und haben alles vor Ort organisiert. Ging eigentlich ganz gut, aber etwas mehr Vorbereitung wäre besser. Die Ostseite der Hauptinsel hat deutlich mehr Regen als die Westseite, wie wir auch lernen mussten.

Melanesia range from Papua New Guinea to Fiji. This was my first trip to the promised land: the dream about the south pacific ended. They cook also only with water. The price performance relationship is not correct and the spots are not so fantastic as expected. We started with the airline ticket and a traveler guide and managed everything on site. That was sufficient but a bit better preparation would be better. The east side of the main island has much more rain fall then the west side, as we had to learn by ourselves too.

Suva ist die Hauptstadt von Fiji und die grösste Stadt in der Südsee. Von einem kleinem Flughafen werden alle regionalen Flüge durchgeführt. Anschluss zum internationalen Flughafen in Nadi wird mit kleinen Flugzeugen oder auf der Strasse durchgeführt. Dabei umrundet man die halbe Insel und es ist ein ganz interssanter Trip, aber natürlich verliert man einen halben Tag damit. Suva selbst ist nicht touristisch, das Strassenbild wird von Einheimischen Indern stark bestimmt. Auch das Einkaufen ist mehr auf die Einheimischen eingestellt.

Suva is the capitol of Fiji and the biggest city in the south pacific. From a small airport all local flights will be performed. The connection to the international airport in Nadi will be realized with small airplanes or on the road. On this trip you circle the half island and it is a nice journey, but of course you loose a half day with this. Suva themselves is not touristy, the pictures on the roads are covered by local Indians, which are about the half of the population. Also the shopping is more fixed on the locals then on tourists.

In Nadi ist der internationale Flughafen und damit auch der Turistenumschlagplatz von Fiji wenn nicht sogar von der ganzen Südsee. Entsprechend touristisch und teuer ist auch alles in der näheren Umgebung aufgezogen. In der Nacht kommen die Grossflieger herein und entladen die Touris die dann früh morgens auf die im Westen vorgelagerten Inseln beziehungsweise an die Südküste weiter verteilt werden. In Nadi selbst gibt es nur ein paar Läden in denen man die letzten Dollars beim Warten auf den Abflug ausgeben kann.

In Nadi is the international airport located und with this it is the tourist reloading point of Fiji when not from the whole south pacific area. Accordant touristy and expensive is everything in the closer surrounding prepared. In the night the huge airplanes come in and load down the tourists which will be in the earlier morning hours distributed to the western offshore islands or to the south costs hotels. In Nadi themselves are only some small shops where you can spend your last dollars waiting on your departing airplane.

Nach der langen Anreise bietet sich die Coral Coast zum Eingewöhnen an. Mehrere grosse Hotels sind in erster Linie auf australische Touristen ausgerichtet. Aufgrund des Jetlegs sind wir immer früh ins Bett. Nach dem langen Flug hat mein Compi gesponnen und mir beim ersten TG zuviel Deko aufgedrückt. Dadurch hat er mir das Vergnügen verschafft, allein im Wasser zu sein während unter mir ein grosser Tigerhai Runden drehte. War schon ein seltsames Gefühl. Das Tauchen war ganz ordentlich, viele Korallen, Rifffische, Bullsharks und Riffhaie.

After the long distance travel the Coral Coast is the best place to acclimatize. Multiple bigger hotels are adjusted for Australian tourists. Because of the jet leg we went every day very early to bed. After the long distance flight my dive computer was crazy and forced me to a extra long deco stop on the first dive. It was a pleasure for me to sit alone in the water and below me a tiger shark was circling around. This was an really an unordinary feeling for me. The diving was proper, many corals, reef fishes, bull sharks an reef sharks.

Das beeindruckendste an der renommierten Tauchadresse Kadavu war der permanente Regen, der nichtvorhandene Strand und die einfachen Hütten. Und das für einen stolzen Preis, begründet mit Eco Aktivitäten. Das erste und einzige mal haben wir eine Buchung in unserem Urlaub vorzeitig abgebrochen. Schon die An- und Abfahrt war hart, und wir mussten die folgende Tage unsere Klamotten alle trocknen lassen. Innerhalb des Riffes ist das Tauchen bescheiden, ausserhalb wurde leider nur einmal angefahren. Da sind gleich 3 Mantas gekommen.

The most impressive on the famous diving location Kadavu was the permanent rainfall, the not existing beach and the very basic bungalows. And that for a proud price, justified by some eco activities. This was the first and only sole exception we terminated a booking in our holidays. Already the arrival and departure trip was bitter and we had to dry the following days all our clothes. Within the reef border the diving is lowly, outside we went unfortunately only ones. And on this trip immediately three mantas appeared.

Bei unserer Flucht von Kadavu gab es nur eine Hoffnung: das in den touristischen Mamanucas das Wetter besser ist - und es war. Durch diese Inseln westlich der Hauptinsel wurde Fiji bekannt. Eine Touri Insel nach der anderen, das Publikum überwiegend australisch, jedoch ist ziemlich die ganze Welt vertreten. Empfang wie es sich gehört mit Bula Gesang. Essen findet im gehobenen Still statt. Der Strand ist exzellent, bis auf die 5pm-Moskitos, die überfallartig den Strand besetzen und ganz fürchterlich stechen. Das Tauchen war auch ganz gut.

In our escape from Kandavu there was only one hope: a nicer weather in the touristy Mamanucas - and it was better. This islands west of the main island made Fiji famous. One touristy island after the next, the visitors are mostly Australian, but the whole world is represented. The greeting in its good manners is performed with Bula singing. The food is served on a upper level. The beach is excellent except the 5pm mosquitoes, which are out of the blue occupies the beach and pierce very horrible. The diving was as well quite good.

Nahe an unserem Garden Island Ressort zieht sich der 180 grad Meridian oder Datumsgrenze entlang, die jedoch zu praktischen Zwecken einige hundert km weiter in den Osten verschoben ist. Wir sind ins Grübeln gekommen, wie das mit dem Tagessprung funktioniert. Das Tauchen ist noch das beste in Fiji, eine professionelle Basis und ordentliche TG. Warum die aber seit Jahren von Rodale Preise als die Weltbesten erhalten konnte ich nicht herausfinden. Das weltberühmte Rainbow Reef hat mich jedenfalls nicht besonders beeindruckt.

Close to our Garden Island Resort is the 180 dgs Meridian or the dateline, which is practically moved some hundred km to east to avoid the date change within a country. We have automatically speculated how does it work with the day jump on the dateline. The diving is the best in Fiji, with a professional dive operator and I had some good dives there. I could not identify why they receive since years permanent the award as the world best. Anyway the world famous Rainbow Reef with its soft coral wall did not impress me very much.

Die bekannteste Inselgruppe in Polynesien wird häufig auch mit dem Namen der Hauptinsel Tahiti umschrieben. Die Gesellschaftsinseln sind Vulkaninseln mit den bekannten Namen Tahiti, Moorea und Bora Bora. Im Tuamotu Archipel sind Korallenatolle mit ausgezeichneten Tauchmöglichkeiten. Jeder Reisende sollte einen gut gefüllten Geldbeutel mitbringen, da die Inseln ein unglaublich hohes Preisniveau haben. Für eine lausige Hütte zahlt man locker 150 Euro. Die Flüge und Hotels sollte man vorab buchen um Überraschungen zu vermeiden.

The best known island group in Polynesia, often also called with the name of the main island Tahiti. The Society Islands are volcano islands with the well known names Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. In the Tuamotu Archipelago are large coral atolls with excellent diving possibilities. Every traveler should be prepared to spend a lot of money, due the islands have a unbelievable high price level. For a lousy cottage they ask for more then 150 Euro. The local flights and accommodation should be booked in advance to avoid surprises.

Auf der Hauptinsel von Französisch Polynesien mit der Hauptstadt Papeete landet man als erstes. Die Stadt hat nichts sehenswertes und man sollte schnellst möglich weiterfliegen. Für eine Übernachtung ist das zentral im Hafen gelegene Prince Hinoi gerade noch erträglich. Flüge kann man direkt bei der Polynesian Airline buchen. Wie wir später erfahren haben soll das Tourist Center Hotels in ganz Polynesien recht günstig vermieten. Recherchen sollten hierzu frühzeitig erfolgen, oder man zahlt ganz heftig wie uns ergangen.

On the main island of French Polynesia with the capitol Papeete every visitor will arrive at first. The city has nothing worth to be seen and should be left as soon as possible. For a one night stay the central located Prince Hinoi Hotel is just acceptable. Flights could be booked direct at the Polynesian Airlines. As we learned later the Tourist Center reserve Hotels all over Polynesia to good conditiones. Investigations for this should be arranged in time, othervice you will pay incredible charges as we have done on most places there.

Das zweitgrößte Atoll auf dieser Erde mit 16km Durchmesser und bekannt für seine gute Tauchplätze. Getaucht wir in den Kanälen an beiden Seiten der Hauptinsel. Die Tauchgänge gehen auf den Grund der Kanäle in etwa 50m und mit der Strömung lässt man sich dann in die Lagune reintreiben. Umkreist wird man dabei von bis zu 50 Grauen, Siberspitzen und Riffhaien. Einen meiner besten Tauchgänge hatte ich hier mit 2 Delphinen für zwanzig Minuten, die uns immer wieder umkreist haben zum Greifen nahe herankamen.

The second biggest atoll on this earth is about 16km wide and well known for the very good dive spots. Dive sites are in the channels on both sites of the main island. The dive excursions goes to the bottoms of the channels about 50m deep and with the current the divers drift into the lagune inside. There could be about 50 grey sharks, silver tips and reef sharks. On one of my best dives ever I had here with 2 dolphins for about 20 minutes. They alltimes circuled us and come as close as you could nearby touch them with your hands.

Die Insel mit der wohl berühmtesten Lagune zieht die Urlauber aus der ganzen Welt an. Bereits beim Anflug strahlt einem das Wasser in vielen Blauvarianten entgegen und darin die unbezahlbaren Wasserbungalows. In dem berühmten Restaurant Bloody Mary sind die Namen von halb Hollywood gelistet. Entsprechend sind auch die Preise ziemlich gesalzen. Wir sind einmal mit dem Fahrrad um die Insel und bei meinem ersten Tauchgang habe ich meine Kamera geflutet - so sind die Mantas und weitere Tauchgänge nicht mehr dokumentiert.

The island with the maybe most famous lagone attract tourists from all over the world. Already at landing the water shows their many different blue colours and also the priceless water bungalows. In the famous restaurant Bloody Mary are the names of half Holywood listed. Therefore are of course the prices extremly high. We made once per bicycle the roundtrip around the island and on my first dive trip on the island I have flooded my camera, so the mantas and the following dive sites are no more pictured.
